We then got to the second location which was the cafe or "Pier Diner" on the show. We were hoping to get a bite to eat but their kitchen was closed so only had coffee available. As ye have it advertised that there would be places to pick up lunch on the way but clearly that was wrong also. One of the character's most noted traits is his use of Australian slang and bush expressions, including "flamin galah", "stone the flamin' crows", and "strike me roan".

In April 2010, it was announced Meagher was taking a break from Home and Away, so he could travel to London to star in the West End production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Meagher said " have very generously allowed me to do Priscilla in the West End from 20 September roughly until early March." Meagher returned to the West End in October 2011. However, the actor, whose contract was up for renewal in 2012, said he was committed to staying in Home and Away because he still enjoyed the role of Alf.

In 2010, a video featuring a parody version of the character was created and posted online by an artist known as "Mr Doodleburger". Alf decides to visit the Canberra war memorial with some students when he realises they do not care about ANZAC Day. As he looks around the memorial, he starts to suffer flashbacks to his time in Vietnam. Later that night, the students and Alf sleep outdoors in trenches as part of the war experience. Alf continues to suffer flashbacks and wanders off by himself, before collapsing.

Meagher has stated that Alf's most memorable storyline is when he develops a brain tumour. He had to film the scenes twice, once with his co-star Nunn and the other without. Meagher holds a Guinness World Record as the longest-serving actor in an Australian serial for portraying Alf since 1988. As of 2011 he is the only remaining original cast member still present. During flashbacks to the character's past, Alf was portrayed by Max Buckley and Robert Jago respectively.

My friend and I attended one of the tours with Paul as the tour guide. Paul was funny, enthusiastic and shared a lot of knowledge and history of the local areas in which we passed a long the way that was insightful and interesting. Paul remained positive and still made the tour fun and exciting even though the weather wasn't the best and we were lucky enough to see some of the cast of Home and Away filming. Overall was a great day, and definitely recommend Flamin' Galah Tours to family and friends planning on visiting Sydney. As there is no filming that day, a famous Home and Away actor will be travelling on the tour bus and available for questions, pictures, merchandise signing and more. You'll see all the same sights as the "Filming Very Likely" tour, but you'll also get quality time (approx. 1.5 hrs) with an actor.

Alf was created as one of the show's eighteen original characters. Meagher originally auditioned for the role of Tom Fletcher, before being cast as Alf. The tour guide/driver was fantastic and overall I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. There was filming taking place and we saw some cast members from a distance but the tour didn’t have any organised way of meeting them or getting photos which was a pity. The whole area is beautiful so I if I was back again I would rent a car and drive up there myself. So very lucky to have 5 actors present for filming today and it was an awesome experience . Everyone was so knowledgeable and friendly and the group we were a part of was fun and when jake aka Robbo came on the bus we were all screaming like school girls .
