Trapani’s Old District occupies a scimitarshaped promontory between the open sea on the north and the salt marshes to the south. The ancient industry of extracting salt from the marshes has recently been revived, and it is documented in the Museo delle Saline. Trips farther afield will take you to the magnificent site of Segesta or the Egadi Islands, reached by boat or hydrofoil from Trapani Port.

What’s Included

Our fellow passengers were fantastic travel mates as they were really interesting, laidback, and fun! At the end of the trip, we exchanged email addresses and vowed to stay in touch. Usually, there are up to 20 passengers on La Bella Vita with a crew of 6-10. That’s one member of staff for every two passengers (or in our case, the crew outnumbered the passengers).

Opera Cruises

Getting lost in the narrow alleyways is a quintessential part of exploring Venice, but at some point you'll almost surely end up in Piazza San Marco, where tourists and locals congregate for a coffee or an aperitif. Much like its stunning scenery, Italy is also renowned for its phenomenal produce. You will experience the local Venetian cuisine on your cruise from Italy, which varies significantly from the traditional recipes from northern Italy. Being a mountain region, Venetian dishes typically use pork, beef and chicken and are often served with polenta.

Pellestrina, a Venetian Island

It’s also the cradle of the Christian faith and home of the Vatican. In addition, the climate is ideal; the people are warm, fun-loving and friendly. There is one other very sought after Italian treasure… its ice cream, called gelato. Well, if you’ve never been to Tres Scalini on the Piazza Navona on a mild evening, you just have not lived.

Italy Ports

Later that same day, La Bella Vita set out on a late afternoon cruise towards Pellestrina. The island of Pellestrina separates the Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea. We sat on the top deck of the barge and admired the numerous little islands dotted with ancient structures. In addition to these daily excursions and outings, there were also a few surprises on the way. The crew added some really fun surprises to the trip that really elevated the experience. I won’t write about them as I don’t want to spoil the surprise.

Walking amongst Classical architecture mingled with Renaissance art, you'll explore the same beautiful cities that inspired Dante, Da Vinci, and even Shakespeare. While you're soaking in the rich history of Italy, dive into local culture as you learn to make pasta in Bologna, browse Milanese high-fashion, and sip golden wine on a Venetian Island. We chose a hotel that wasn’t far from the main train station and Piazzale Roma as this was to be our pickup point to travel to the barge the following day. I suggest extending your stay in Venice, especially if you’ve never been before.

Golden glass-tiled mosaics line the interior walls and cupolas, giving the church its nickname, Church of Gold. It houses treasures collected by Venetians over the centuries. The relics of St. Mark, patron saint of the city, were stolen from Alexandria, and the Tetrarch, a group of four crowned figures, was looted from Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade. Every successful Venetian voyager returned with something to decorate the basilica—a frieze, a statue—and the result is one of the most stunning works of art and architecture in this amazing city. River Cruise Specialists have extensive knowledge about the different river cruise destinations available worldwide. They can provide information on the various ports of call, cultural attractions, and local experiences that each destination has to offer.

Our small group continued the bike ride along one edge of the island that had a lengthy paved path on the waterfront. We looped back around and arrived back at the barge just in time for dinner (and an incredible sunset!). We docked in Pellestrina alongside a collection of bright and colourful homes. At this point, you can either walk or go bike riding on the island. Justin and I hopped on the bikes as we love cycling when we travel. Whether you’re bike riding or walking, we all met at a small gelato shop in Pellestrina for a treat (they had two vegan gelato choices, including a dark chocolate one).

Elba is the Tuscan archipelago's largest island, but it resembles nearby verdant Corsica more than it does its rocky Italian sisters, thanks to a network of underground springs that keep it lush and green. A car is very useful for getting around the island, but public buses stop at most towns several times a day; the tourist office has timetables. We chose the Venetian canals and Po Valley, however, as this journey features many picturesque towns and villages in which you can stop and explore on cruises of Italy such as the historic Adria, Ferrara, and Mantua. During this time, visitors can make the most of the beautiful Italian weather, with the sun shining and the days bright. Having said this, many people are now opting to cruise Italy during the spring and autumn months – commonly referred to as the ‘shoulder seasons’ – and avoiding summer all together it  can get extremely busy.

It’s a real, living, breathing neighborhood, not just a historic site. One of Venice’s six main sestieri, or districts, The Dorsoduro is quieter than some of the more popular districts and thus has an authentic, easygoing atmosphere. More days means more to discover, with extension packages you can add before or after your Viking cruise or cruisetour. Each breathtaking creation is paired with a hand-selected Italian wine such as Chianti Classico Castello d’Albola, Rose Blanc Brut Sanfeletto and Rosso d Montepulciano la Bracesca. On our cruises from Italy you will choose to embark or disembark at the city of Mantua, situated on the Canal Bianco which runs alongside the Po River.
